Yesterday was Canada Day! That means our nation’s 149th birthday and a day off work! KD and I celebrated by going to a festival that had music, entertainment and a bunch of food trucks.
We tried a few items while we were there and one dish we shared was the jerk chicken sandwich. I’m happy we got it because I almost passed on it thinking it came with typical hamburger buns and dry meat.
Surprisingly, the buns on these were fresh and soft and the meat was so succulent it just melted in your mouth. It was a perfect balance of spices and it wasn’t overly spicy nor bland. It was filled with sweet potato “coins” and creamy mint yogurt, which complemented the deliciously flavoured meat. It also came with a side of freshly fried chips and some hot sauce. It had to be good, considering they claimed the meat is marinated for three days!
Then we got Captain Crunch fish tacos. I can’t recall the last time I ate the cereal, but these were probably the best fish tacos I’ve had in my life!
The fish were deep-fried a nice and crunchy golden-brown and the soft tortillas were filled with pickled red cabbage, avocado purée, tomatoes, cilantro, scallions, smoked sour cream and a tasty hot sauce. It was so good!
Unfortunately due to high winds, they cancelled the fireworks which is one of the highlights of Canada Day. However, there’s always next year – the big 150! Should be good. 🙂
